Technology is changing our world at an unprecedented rate, and the communication and PR industries are well-positioned to take advantage of these changes. For instance, the popularity of generative AI, a type of AI that can produce text or other content in response to user prompts, has surged following the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in November 2022. Generative AI is a rapidly developing field that has the potential to revolutionise the public relations industry. To sum up, generative AI can help PR practitioners save time and resources and focus on more strategic work.

In the era of the increasing prominence of generative AI, it is crucial for us PR practitioners to embrace an early adopter mentality when it comes to this technology. While AI holds the promise of automating numerous tasks within the PR industry, it is essential to acknowledge that it cannot supplant the essential human qualities of creativity, empathy, and critical thinking.

Rather, Generative AI should be regarded as a valuable tool that empowers PR practitioners to enhance their efficiency, productivity, and calibre of work. Personally, I have found ChatGPT, Grammarly, Quillbot, and Copy AI to be incredibly helpful in my work. They have helped me save time, improve my writing, and create visually appealing presentations.

From my standpoint, Generative AI has a bright future in public relations. As technology advances, it will become more powerful and versatile, enabling all PR practitioners to create more engaging and personalised communications and automate time-consuming and labour-intensive tasks.

From my own research desk, here are some of the future trends that we can expect to see in the use of generative AI in the public relations industry:

Increased use of chatbots: Chatbots are already being used by some PR practitioners to answer customer questions and provide support. As the technology continues to develop, we expect to see more widespread use of chatbots, freeing PR practitioners to focus on other tasks.

Personalised email marketing: Generative AI can be used to create personalised email marketing campaigns that are more likely to be opened and read. This will help PR practitioners improve the effectiveness of their email marketing efforts.

More engaging content: Generative AI can be used to create more engaging content that is more likely to be shared and liked on social media. This will help PR practitioners like us reach a wider audience and build relationships with influencers.

When used responsibly and mindfully, with human oversight, AI can empower every one of us to work more efficiently and effectively, regardless of the application. Overall, the future of generative AI in public relations is very bright. As technology continues to develop, it will likely become an essential tool for any PR practitioner who wants to stay ahead of the curve.
